VHS Epics
And so it was time of experiment with lighting effects while getting extra audience reach by drawing reimagined versions of beloved cartoon characters. But since the Disney Princess market was a bit saturated, I chose some less known faces that deserved the same honour. That’s how the VHS Epics collection started.
This time it’s the turn for the expansionist alien from Invader Zim.
Glossy Surface Patterns
The pupil-less eyes and antennas make me think Zim could be a sort of insect, so I took this as an opportunity to render glossy surfaces with patterns. It was also interesting to imagine how Zim’s impossible facial expressions would translate to a design with anatomical limitations.

For Zim’s eyes I used the texture from a real ant’s eye, photographed by Noah Fram.

Since aliens are kind of sci-fi, I also added a leather space suit and some lens flare hints to the mix.
