Furnace Hero
VHS Epics
And so it was time of experiment with lighting effects while getting extra audience reach by drawing reimagined versions of beloved cartoon characters. But since the Disney Princess market was a bit saturated, I chose some less known faces that deserved the same honour. That’s how the VHS Epics collection started.
This time it’s the turn for the unsuspected saviours Heffer & G.I. Jimbo from Rocko’s Modern Life.
Fur and Liquid Marble
Heffer is obviously a yellow steer, so not much to invent there. The little whiskers on the snout and the hair colour transition to green were a bit tricky. With Jimbo I wanted to try out drawing a liquid marble effect on a rigid surface. Trying to imagine how a real G.I. Joe figure could arrive to that position was a fun exercise.

Process
I usually start with some rough line sketches and play around with the point of view and positions. When I’m happy with the general composition, I draw the contours with more precision using the base colour for each area. Then I choose subtle warm or cold variations for the shadow and highlights to do the basic shading of the volumes. Finally I add the texture details, specular highlights and other reflections from the surroundings.
